Graduated Moscow Conservatory in viola in 1949.
Then worked as accompanist in the orchestra of the All-Union Radio, including as a solo violinist.

1955 graduated from the conducting faculty of the Leningrad Conservatory.
Then worked as an assistant accompanist in the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra.
Began his conducting career in Tomsk, led the orchestras of Novosibirsk and Khabarovsk.

1966-1971 - Chief conductor of the Voronezh Symphony Orchestra.
Promoted the music of modern composers.

(Probably) conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of Cinematography of the USSR in Moscow from late 1971.
Recorded music films, including “ Ascension ”, “ Adventures of Grass ”, “ Return of Budulai ” etc.

Second half of the 1970s: he simultaneously led the ensemble of undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Moscow Conservatory , with O. Kagan , N. Gutman , and Y. Bashmet were soloists . S. There is a well-known recording of a chamber concert by Alban Berg , performed by Nikolayevsky with Richter, Kagan and the ensemble of the Moscow Conservatory on the EMI label.

From 1991 to April 2003 - conductor of the Omsk Chamber Orchestra. He conducted an active concert activity, toured abroad.
