Primary and Secondary phase were first recorded and broadcast, on BBC Radio 4, in 1978.
They were first broadcast in the US, on NPR, in March 1981, edited down from their original 29+ minute running time to 25–26 minutes.
They were "remastered" and put out on CD in 1990 and 2001. Special editions were released in November 2008, given "a thorough clean-up and remaster" by Dirk Maggs, using a new Philip Pope signature tune.
