~ Symphony

Annotation

1877 version

Bruckner made a thorough revision of the symphony in 1877. The editions by Robert Haas (published 1938) and Leopold Nowak (published 1965) are both based on this version, and are the basis of the majority of the extant recordings.

However, the Haas edition contains some features of the 1872 version which were crossed out by Bruckner in the 1877 manuscript. The Nowak edition seeks to better replicate Bruckner's 1877 intentions, but unfortunately still includes some of Haas's errors. A later edition by William Carragan (published 1997) corrects these errors, and is considered to be the definitive rendition of the 1877 version.
